Disability Awareness Week

Disability Awareness Week is held at the end of May or early June to coincide with the National Accessibility Week.

This year we will be hosting the Accessibility Impact Awards 2025 on May 29th by invitation only.

We will be having three awards during this invitation event:

 The Judy Sharp Community Champion Award - This Award is presented by the NWT Disabilities Council to a person or group that has made a significant on-going contribution, as a volunteer, to improving life for persons living with disabilities in the North. It is a Territory wide award.

The NWT Human Rights Commission Accessibility Award - This award is presented to a business in recognition of new or existing physical and/or non-physical accommodations that increase accessibility to services for the public. Community projects or services  that promote accessibility and inclusion of persons with disabilities are also considered for the award.

The GNWT Accessibility and Inclusion Award - The Government of the Northwest Territories Accessibility and Inclusion Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of an NWT resident who has helped improve accessibility and promote inclusion for persons with disabilities across the territory.

 
Rights of People with Disabilities. Health: equal access to healthcare; option of care outside home community; highest standard of medical care without discrimination. Justice: equal protection of law; live free of violence and neglect; privacy and autonomy respected. Family and Social Protection: government support to reduce poverty; live with family; safe caregivers. Education: inclusive education system; free equal access; parent and student involvement. Community Living: choice of who and where to live; safe accessible housing; access to public spaces. Employment: reasonable accommodations; NWT employment standards; protection from exploitation; affirmative action.
